Service project
We collected items for the 5100 unit at Duke University Hospital for our service project and we ended up with some great things. Thank you to all who donated items for such a great cause. Our total numbers were 20 plus individual gallon sized bags of toiletry items and 20 plus gallon sized bags of craft items. That is just our room. Ms. Lopez's room collected over 20 bags of each too. Thank you!

National Drinking Water Week
Dear
Educator and/or Parent,
Each
year the City of Durham’s Department of Water Management celebrates National
Drinking Water Week (May 5 – 11, 2013), by sponsoring a water conservation
poster contest to commemorate this annual event. This contest helps to bring
attention to how important of a resource that water is to all living things on
the planet. Fresh water is a limited, finite resource which we all must protect
and conserve.
We
invite your students/children to use their artistic talents to celebrate
drinking water and to promote water conservation. We are sponsoring this
contest for schools and home schooled children within our service area. The
contest is designed to encourage our local young artists to express their own
ideas in relation to the chosen theme. This year’s theme is: “Reduce Your
Water Footprint”.
- Poster
must be created on paper of any type (poster board, construction paper,
etc.) and must be no larger than 22” X 28” (standard poster board size).
Only the original poster can be submitted into the competition, no
photocopies. One poster entry per child.
- Each
poster should depict the student’s own idea(s), reflecting the theme: “Reduce Your Water Footprint”. The
idea(s) can be either illustration form only or may include the theme.
Students must use only crayons, colored or other pencils, markers or
paint. Posters containing computer-generated
graphics, photographs, collages or 3-D artwork will not be eligible for
consideration.
- Each poster must have the official entry
form attached to the back. All information must be filled in completely
and legibly. Illegible entries will be disqualified. Please print or type
ALL information. Please be sure that the student’s name is CLEARLY
legible. Entry forms may be copied, if needed.
- Each
school must submit entries to the City of Durham’s Department of Water
Management. Arrangements can be made to pick up entries from the school.
If your school wishes to mail the entries, they must be postmarked by
March 22, 2013. Please note: Students may submit poster
entries directly to the City without school sponsorship. Any entries
received or postmarked later than March 22, 2013 will may
be disqualified from competition.
- Grade
divisions are as follows:
·
Elementary
School Divisions
§ Division A: K – 2nd
grades
§ Division B: 3rd
– 5th grades
·
Middle
School Division: 6th – 8th grades
- A
panel of judges (to be selected by the City) will select the first, second
and third place winning posters for each grade division. Winning posters
from each division will represent Durham in the statewide contest
sponsored by the NC American Water Works Association and the NC Water
Environment Association. It is an option for the school to
submit all posters for a grade division or your school may choose to
select the first place entries in each category and forward to us. If you
choose to make the selection, please notify us in advance. Also, we would
be happy to assist in the selection process in conjunction with your
“school” panel.
- Posters
will be judged on message (keep in mind the theme), originality,
creativity and overall presentation.
- Posters
become the property of the City of Durham and will not be returned. Local
winners will be recognized at special ceremonies during Drinking Water
Week and winning entries will be displayed during Drinking Water Week. All
prizes will be awarded in

The second grade team will be placing an order for class
t-shirts. It is our goal to wear these
t-shirts to show our school spirit and pride. We also hope to wear these

Class
t-shirts will be a solid color (Ms. Wall’s red, Mrs. Murray’s blue, Ms.
Lopez’s yellow, and Mrs. Derby’s purple) with bold black lettering spelling
CLUB. The student’s shirts will look very similar to the staff t-shirts this
year.
If you would like to purchase
a t-shirt for your child please complete this form and return it as well as
your payment to school by Thursday, November 1st.
In order to ensure your child is able to wear his shirt all
year please plan for “growing” room when you place your order. We would love to
see these shirts able to be worn until your child exits Club.
If
you would like to sponsor a fellow peer by making a donation for a class t-shirt

Frankenstein and adjectives
We have been learning about adjectives this week and what better way to describe something than to create our very own Frankensteins. After creating their own Frankensteins students wrote sentences using adjectives to describe their creations. What a fabulous job they did!
